Here are some tips for properly maintaining and storing your RV batteries during the winter months:
1. Remove batteries from the RV if storing it for winter. This prevents parasitic drain from components inside the RV. Store batteries in a cool, dry location like a garage or basement.
2. Fully charge the batteries before winter storage. Batteries stored at a full charge hold up much better than ones stored partially discharged.
3. Consider a battery maintainer/tender. Hooking the batteries up to a smart charger will keep them topped up over the winter.
4. Check water levels (for flooded lead-acid). Top off each cell with distilled water after fully charging before storage.
5. Clean battery terminals and casings. Remove any corrosion buildup with a battery terminal cleaner.
6. Store on a non-conductive surface. Wood or plastic surfaces prevent potential short circuits.
7. Check and charge periodically. Even if using a tender, fully recharge the batteries every 2-3 months during storage.
8. Insulate batteries in freezing temps. Batteries lose significant capacity in extreme cold, so storing inside and insulating is recommended.
9. Don't charge frozen batteries. Allow them to fully thaw out before charging or you can damage them.
Proper off-season battery care prevents sulfation buildup and excessive self-discharge so they'll be ready and healthy for your first RV trip in spring. Batteries are a big investment - taking good care extends their life.
