Here are some tips on proper water levels for golf cart batteries:
- Check electrolyte (fluid) levels at least monthly. More often in hot weather.
- Only check water levels AFTER the battery has been fully charged. Checking before charging can give a false low reading.
- Electrolyte level should be at or slightly above the battery plates inside the cell. Typically about 1/4 to 1/2 inch above the plates.
- Water level should NOT be all the way up to the bottom of the fill cap. This would cause overflow and fluid loss during charging.
- If water level is low in any cell, add just enough distilled water to reach the recommended level. Do not overfill.
- Low electrolyte exposes plates allowing increased sulfation and corrosion. But overfilling can also cause problems.
- Special watering 'eye' indicators on certain batteries show the proper level. Add water if below the indicator.
- Be sure cell caps are secure after checking/adding water. Loose caps can vibrate off.
Maintaining proper electrolyte levels maximizes battery life and performance. Add distilled water as needed, but never battery acid unless fully replacing the electrolyte. Let me know if you have any other battery maintenance questions!
